Double Indemnity is obviously a classic film but this DVD transfer is appalling. Almost every scene is incredibly grainy, the source print is obviously not in very qualified conditon (perhaps needing to be refurbished), and to top it off, there are no deluxe features and the extra packaging is rather inadequate(with no information booklet or history of the movie) .
This would be frustrating for any film but is downright outrageous treatment of a cinema classic. We can only hope someone will employ the time and money significant to restore the print for a unusual theater rush, as has been done with other older films. Perhaps then, DVD buyers will salvage the version of this classic they deserve.
What a sizable film! It’s honest incredible. Especially Edward G. Robinson. Sadly, it’s a bit dated (mighty of the dialogue looks rather campy by today’s standards), but the area hasn’t outmoded a day. It’s peaceful a tense and arresting film noir masterpiece.
It’s a pity the DVD is so very awful. It’s really unpleasant. I can’t stress this enough. It’s very grainy, there are no bonus features at all, and there’s no liner notes at all. Extremely shoddy treatment of such a incredible film. I’d like to observe a special edition of this film produced as soon as possible, and done lawful!

Essex Boys is a 1999 “gangster” film that takes the viewer into the gritty, hazardous domain of Essex’s drug-dealing underworld. The yarn is narrated in portion by a lad named Billy, a lowly (but fairly incandescent) driver for the self-important kingpins, and though we don’t view everything from Billy’s vantage point, it is an effective and involving means of presenting the chronicle. Though the characters and the chronicle are pure fiction, the inspiration for the film came from the destroy of three suspected drug dealers whose bodies were found in a Range Rover in Essex in 1995. The tale created around this real-life event is highly imaginative, plausible, sharp, and suspenseful.
Sean Bean (Sharpe, Extremely Risky, Bravo Two Zero, The Fifteen Streets, Golden Stare), donning a cockney-flavoured Essex accent, is simply great as the jealous, arrogant, mean-spirited, foul-mouthed Jason Locke, a drug-dealing thug who’s unbiased been released from prison (and who thinks he’s God’s gift to women) . He’s one of those chaps, the girth of whose vocabulary is such that he’d easily be rendered speechless were he required to jabber so great as one sentence without lacing it liberally with the “F” word. There is not noteworthy at all to like about Locke. He treats women like dirt and has diminutive more respect for his colleagues.
Those old to seeing Bean as an action hero will no doubt luxuriate in (if that is the true word!) seeing him in such a defective role. He is known for really internalizing his roles and becoming the character he’s portraying; indeed, it’s almost disturbing to gawk him here, for he simply exudes foulness.

The film co-stars Alex Kingston (Moll Flanders) as Locke’s feisty, shrewd, ambitious wife, Lisa. Kingston is a very generous actress who is well-paired with Bean in this film. Another familiar face is Tom Wilkinson (The Pudgy Monty), who is fantastic as drug middle-man John Dyke.
This is a gritty, violent film that doesn’t have benefit any punches in its depiction of the drug underworld. It’s a honorable sage with a very satisfying ending. It’s a reliable production and is consumately acted by all alive to. Recommended to fans of the “gangster” film genre and to fans of Sean Bean.
After the flash and fire of Lock, Stock…, there were a whole spate of Brit crime flicks (including its empty-headed sequel Snatch) . It’s a credit to the genre (or sub-genre) that Essex Boys is one of the better entries.
That can be attributed to a very vivid script, terrific acting (since when have British actors failed to articulate the goods? ), and fast-paced directing–all of which content of a interested conception of exactly how to craft a thriller that moves the contrivance it should.

Sean Bean is outstanding here as Jason, an ugly-minded thug who’s unbiased been let out of the pen. The ending is very far off from what anyone would expect; the plotting here shows off, as mentioned, fair how sparkling the filmmakers–writer and director both–really are.
A mammoth addition to your crime flick space of films, Essex Boys bites, punches, stings, and packs a wallop. Grab it.

This is a brilliant, spicy narrative of naval warfare, but it’s also a satisfying and consuming portrayal of a current community: the company of a warship. The film is fat of stirring action scenes, but it is equally rich in the details of the men’s everyday life: their food, shipboard entertainment, naval tradition, etc. It’s a sweaty, muscular portrait that really puts you in the midst of this entertaining world.
Weir gets pleasurable performances from the grand ensemble cast. Crowe won my heart as the captain: he portrays a man who is tough and witty, but also humane and reasonable. Paul Bettany plays the ship’s surgeon, both a trusty friend and verbal sparring partner for the captain; it’s a marvelously realized relationship. The rest of the cast rises to the high label site by these advantageous performers; Max Pirkis in particular shines as a fearless young midshipman.
There are some intense scenes of violence and combat surgery. But this material is not gratuitous, and is handled with care by Weir, who never loses stare of his characters’ humanity. And the film is also about noteworthy more than war; it’s also about exploring a distant land and seeing wondrous sights. There are nice moments of humor to balance out the film’s serious themes of military discipline, ethics and tactics. Overall, M&C is a rousing adventure account, told with heart. As a Navy old-fashioned myself, I’d like to thank and commend all fervent with this film.

This video is not Rigoletto at Verona, it is the opera produced as a film in Mantua, the exact setting of the opera. The town, the river, and the lovely ducal palace are the settings for what is really a handsome and thrilling production. In addition to Pavarotti as the duke, the cast features Ingmar Wixell as a righteous Rigoletto and Edita Gruberova as an ethereal and convincing Gilda. The horrors of the chronicle are powerfully and movingly played out through huge singing and a terrific production job. Unbelievable, and haunting.
Okay, first off, it’s a FILM version of the opera, so one can’t quite assume it by the standards of a recorded live opera. After being a devoted opera fan for over 20 years, I need to mention that ANYONE, not only “newbies” will indulge in it. What I immediately noticed was the fact that the opera earn is here without omissions, a predicament that haunts many attempts of making a satisfactory opera film. “Otello” or “La Traviata”, for instance, are superbly staged, but they suffer from many scene omissions, which can be upsetting to the fans. Not the case here, at least I could not net any without having to retrieve my copy of the earn and compare it line by line.
The absolute revelation for me was Mr. Ingwar Wixell. I’ve heard his bid many times, particularly on early Verdi recordings brought to life by Lamberto Gardelli. Well, here he sounds even better, plus he proves himself as one of the best singing actors I’ve ever seen. At the first scene at Duke’s palace, Rigoletto is unimaginative disgusting, no wonder that Monterone curses him. By the procedure, Monterone is played by Wixell as well, and I was surprised by the sonority and astronomical rude register that his baritone is able to manufacture. Later, he’s a obsessively loving father and a naughty “vendicator”. Loved Feruccio Furlanetto’s Sparafucile! I could not maintain it was he under all that makeup, but the pitch-black quality of his narrate is unmistakable. Edita Gruberova has long been one of the world’s leading high coloratura sopranos. Indeed, to be able to accurately negotiate Gilda’s tessitura, one needs a spectacular high range. Sutherland also had that kind of high register, but Gruberova was a better choice cinematically, I converse. Smooth, I wished for a subtler portrait of Gilda, but it had to do. Pavarotti’s Duke is, of course, why most folks will acquire this DVD. Well, he definitely gives a dashing Duke. He sings up a storm on a soundtrack (including the impossible high ending of “possente amor”) and a tongue-in-chick “la donna e mobile”, his signature aria. He overplays a bit, but he’s a lot of fun to peer. Since he does not have to stammer and recede at the same time, he really bounces around quite a bit and looks very distinguished at home throughout.
The film depicted the court of the Duke in the most just plot. They’re quite like vultures, and appropriately dressed in dark. Marullo is sang by none other than Bernd Weikl, but played (wonderfully) by an actor. Even Giovanna is cast luxuriously - it’s Fedora Barbieri who does not only provide a tall convey, but also some much-needed laughable relief in this fairly black opera based on Hugo’s “The King Amuses Himself”. Riccardo Chailly conducts with gusto, but also with helpful sensitivity.
Overall, it’s a well thought-out film, I could not reflect of a contrivance of making it any better. Even the often messed-up abduction scene is quite believable here. The subtitles are not terrible, and the represent on DVD is a LOT better than on VHS or LaserDisc.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a timeless, lustrous parable of Superb Vs. Ghastly, played out in the U.S. Senate. In many ways, ‘Smith’ is crop from the same cloth as Capra’s earlier masterpiece, ‘Mr. Deeds Goes to Town’, and both films costar the elegant Jean Arthur, here cast as Smith’s secretary. She is an venerable hand at opinion political wheelings and dealings, and at first, she considers her novel boss a total idiot! But Smith’s integrity wins her over, and with the serve of reporter Thomas Mitchell (1939’s busiest actor!), the three manage to outlast the forces of Despicable, in the most rousing filabuster Hollywood has ever filmed!
Two supporting characters deserve special attention; Harry Carey, one of Hollywood’s most beloved Western stars, plays a warm, sympathetic Vice President, in a cramped but very crucial role; and Beulah Bondi is terrific as Stewart’s mother (she would play his mother again in the Capra/Stewart classic ‘It’s A Fantastic Life’) .

I fair would like to add one fact to praise this DVD, and serve everybody who visits this page to recall it, even if they have seen the movie; in many cases, colossal polular classics are oftenly viewed on abominable prints and video masters, because of the very popularity of the film, the prints and negatives tend to accept damged. overused, often replaced with corrupt film elements. The trasnfer is from their restored print, which they worked out of the new camera negative. Some parts of the negative were also damged, but they succeeded in replacing them with film elements that are not apparently base. The result is, a sharper, detailed gawk that we have been unable to search for for over 4 or 5 decades.
These film archive people are doing a extraordinary and critical job. Restoring a film is not an easy job, and certainly is not cheap. That why these DVDs are so valuable, so that you can understand the importance of what they are doing.

Lee and Kevin Lawrence King, this film is lightweight but carries itself with style and fun by director Ryan Limited and makes for an keen diversion of a film that is not about the heavier issues with which most films today are dealing.

Abigail Morrison (a charming Shiri Appleby) grew up with absentee parents and spent her inactive hours drawing and creating an imaginary friend Sy (Orlando Seale) to care for her loneliness. Unfortunately she has carried Sy into her adult life, preventing her from dating true human beings. As an art student she paints her imaginary boyfriend who is always there for her and makes her mistrustful of steady guys who are high-tail to desert her…! Abby meets a cocky young student Quinn (Prick Zano) faking his interest in art to secure easy college credits. There is a mutual attraction that takes some time to develop: Abby talks about her boyfriend Sy to shield her vulnerability. Abby’s friend Jessica (Alexandra Holden) is aware of Abby’s imaginary Sy and attempts to find her to date trusty men. But Jessica is not without her problems - maintaining employment at Borders Bookstore being one of them - and through a series of accidental encounters, Quinn steps in to support Jessica preserve her job on the promise that Abby will coach him in art. The clear happens and Quinn’s growth as a person mirrors Abby’s ability to forego her need to mask tedious Sy and the two become a couple.
The young cast is fair and for the most fragment acts well. There are some unusual subplots that don’t add powerful to the storyline but at least introduce some different offbeat characters. Black Sabbath is one of those movies that made a horrifyingly-indelible impression on me when I first saw it. In “The Topple of Water”, I can detached search for the contorted visage of the tiring, spiritualist as she fixes her malevolent leer on the woman who has robbed her in death. “The Telephone” was the weakest of the trio. But the third segment–The Wurdalak–gave me insomnia for days. As a lover of the vampire genre, I was struck by the twist in the worn legend: a Wurdalak returns from the stupid to attack those whom he loved best on earth. Boris Karloff plays the title character, a paterfamilias who sets out to waste a local bandit-turned-Wurdalak. If he has not returned in exactly three days, the family will know that he has been victimized, and must be destroyed. Of course, he returns fair after the three day stamp. The sheer fear comes from the fact that the family knows the truth, but can’t admit it. The scene of Karloff cuddling and stroking his young grandson is enough to compose you want to call Child Protective Services! Instead this is the European Italian language version with subtitles and even Karloff’s jabber is dubbed in Italian. Their advertising is very misleading for the unaware.

There’s legitimate complaint from anime lovers that mecha (meaning shows based on robots) is guilty of being too formulaic. The formula, in case you’re wondering, typically goes something like this: Young kid with a heart of gold happens upon a giant robot that even the engineers who created it cannot master. Said youth possesses the skills required to tame this complex section of machinery and thus uses it to keep the world. Okay so maybe that’s a bit vast and generalized but I’ll be honest: Mecha is my hold personal passion and the stuff that got me into anime in the first dwelling (anyone else remember Voltron and Robotech? )

These days’ mecha shows have become a bit more complex than what we enjoyed in the early 1980s and while there is some legitimacy to the complaints that the genre is formulaic, studios like Gonzo countered by adding recent art elements to their robot shows. Enter Gad Guard; a 26-episode mecha television series directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori that hit airwaves serve in 2005.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting Funimation’s release of this property since word of their acquisition of the exhibit reached my monitor. Released across 4 discs, the Complete Series contains all 26 episodes and comes in at a total runtime of 600 minutes.

The plot comes packaged in a pair of mediate packs (each housing two discs) within a beautifully artistic cardboard slipcase.
The display wears a fairly conservative PG 13 rating due, presumably, to themes of voilence over cross language or nudity.
Language options are thorough with both an English dub and Japanese current dialog option (each in stereo) with English subtitles if so desired.
As is so often the case in original anime, Gad Guard warns of the cautions of humanity’s continual exhaust (abuse) of natural resources. Location several hundred years in the future, the resources of the Earth have all but bustle dry. Populations are now divided into crowded slums called Units.
The chronicle follows a street-smart delivery boy by the name of Hajiki Sanada who is struggling to provide for his mom and exiguous sister in Unit 74, specifically in a ghetto known as Night Town (because in difficulty to content what petite natural resources remain, the electricity is shut off each day at midnight) . When this knit-hat donning errand boy happens to botch a delivery spellbinding a mysterious murky cube, Hajiki finds himself mixed up in a massive struggle for the forbidden technology contained within. Suddenly the show’s title makes a lot more sense, as in attempt to retrieve the murky cube (called a much stone) ; Hajiki accidentally releases a 20-foot-tall robot (called a Gad) that answers only to his beckoning call.
What we have, in simple terms, is the robotic equivalent to the venerable classic genie in the lamp mythos. Only rather than grant wishes, the Gad ends up disposing of the cast of goons who were seeking the dark box (and with it Hajiki) in the first region. Nearly a happily ended fairy account in and of itself, the precise action begins when a second Gad ends up in the control of one Katana (the main poor guy) .
Robotic clashing ensues and the simple life of running deliveries for chump change is forever relegated to Hajiki’s young memory.
What the tale lacks in originality or risk-taking is more than made up for by its abundance of charm. Gad Guard is rife with attractive visuals that construct spend of an intentional washed-out appearance sprinkled with exiguous flashes of color. The Gads themselves are nearly colorless build for their bird-like eyeballs and our hero comes decked out in earth tones except for his luminous pink vest. Many of the robotic combat sequences bewitch spot after dismal (unfortunately) which only further adds to the overall dimness.
The recognize isn’t only for uniqueness sake however as, don’t forget, this is a sage told in the slums of the city about a abominable family struggling to fabricate ends meet. As such the shades of gray and grit go a long map in depicting this motif. Additionally the little details (such as the dogs) actually peep as if they could have been penned up by contemporary artist, Gary Baseman (kids, google this guy if you don’t know who he is) . Now that I consider on it, it almost appears as though the whole exhibit was infused with his influence.
The soundtrack matches the art with aloof jazz numbers filling in between soaring orchestration at the show’s key moments. The English dub is surprisingly solid as well and can honestly be considered one of few dubs that’s nearly as emotionally-powerful as the current Japanese source material.
The show’s pacing is consistent with tech-heavy action sequences taking the spotlight away from supporting cast character development. However, there is enough personality among the main characters to compensate.
In all this is a charming mecha entry that proves without a doubt that the genre unruffled has a lot of life left in it. The artwork and music are graceful enough to carry the present if valuable but the anecdote comes on strong and remains so solid that the odds and ends are never asked to overextend themselves. Funimation deserves total praise for ensuring that titles like Gad Guard will not descend away into obscurity as a result of Geneon’s untimely demise.
I received the item correct on time, it was in perfect condition, and I also watched the whole thing in 5 days. The animation is really well done, it’s droll, it’s well drawn, and the robots are unprejudiced astounding. I like the rollercoaster of emotions that you go through while watching it and it’s a series I would definatly suggest to anyone if they haven’t stare it or heard of it.
